The U.S. Department of Education is dedicated to increasing the diversity of our educator workforce, recognizing that teachers and leaders of color will play a critical role in ensuring equity in our education system.

An analysis of the relationships between history, law and school (de)segregation requires theory that helps to explain how Latinas/os have been subjugated because of their ethnicity, and how they have reacted and resisted institutional racism. Critical Race Theory (CRT) is best suited to explore these relationships because at its basic premise is the idea that institutional racism was and continues to be the cause behind Anglo American school (de)segregation efforts.

We used Latina/Latino Critical Race Theory (LatCrit) to re-analyze survey and interview data from earlier research in which we found that Latina/o students reported less positive experiences than other students in this high school. We found racial injustice in class enrollments, in students’ experiences with stereotypes and prejudice, in student-teacher relationships, and in school policies and norms.

Critical Race Theory (CRT) is a term that describes the scholarly production of a group of more-or-less leftist legal theorists who place "race consciousness" at the center of their analyses.

The history of school desegregation legislation in the United States is not often associated with the Mexican Community in Southern California and is usually thought to have begun with the 1954 landmark Supreme Court case of Brown vs. the Topeka school board. It has recently come to light that the earliest court cases concerning school desegregation occurred in the Southwest and California in the 1930s.

In 1931, the Southern California community of Lemon Grove served as the unlikely stage for a dramatic and significant civil rights court case.
