ASARCO and Environmental Justice: PBL

Project Guidelines

Your final test grade will be based on choosing one of the six projects listed below. Select the project you would like to complete to demonstrate your understanding of Copper Stain.
Make sure to sign-up with your teacher.

Making Connections

Choose two articles and/or reports from the Links tab.

Make two Venn Diagrams. After reading each article, compare and contrast the article/report with a chapter from Cooper Stain.

Each Venn Diagram will include at least fifteen comparing/contrasting statements.

A Tale for Today

Rachel Carson wrote a "Fable for Tomorrow" in Silent Spring. Write a tale for today about what would a more environmentally just society look like in your community based on what you have learned from reading Copper Stain.

ASARCO Timeline

Create a historical and environmental timeline using Copper Stain and special collections from UTEP's library. You must have at least 30 entries that include photos or illustrations along with a detailed description.

Thinking About Your Community

Make a poster and reesarch each question that examines our community's exposure to pollution in 2020.

  • What source(s) of pollution exist? For example, does a major highway cut through your town, exposing residents to a lot of noise and fumes? Is there a landfill or a hazardous waste disposal area? Is there a power plant that is noisy and puts smoke into the air?
  • Who lives in the areas where these pollutants are concentrated? Is there a pattern similar to what you saw on the map of Connecticut?
  • Are there any organizations or individuals in your area talking about the situation being unjust?

Mapping

Create a detailed map documenting environmental issues in El Paso by including historical and current exposures to air, soil, and water pollution in El Paso.

Choose Your Own

Provide a detailed project outline and present it to Ms. Bentancourt or Ms. Hardin for approval.
